Florida Bariatric Centers January 20, 2015

Largo, FL – The Florida Bariatric Centers at Largo Medical Center performed the first minimally invasive robotic Adjustable Gastric Band weight loss surgery in Florida*, this past week. This follows the performance in late 2013 of the area’s first robotic sleeve procedure.

Tiffany Jessee, DO, Bariatric & General Surgeon, also performed this first-of-its-kind Adjustable Gastric Band at the hospital, using the da Vinci Si Surgical Robot. “Today more people are having a tough time trying to get healthier by losing the weight needed to get there,” said Dr. Jessee. “Making the decision to have surgical weight loss means making the decision to, in many cases, get off medications patients may have been on for related health conditions; it’s a win-win situation.”

Many patients prefer their surgeon to use a robot, when available, because it allows the surgeon to make fewer and smaller abdominal incisions. This minimally invasive procedure offers patients an advanced surgical option that can help them return to their daily routine faster, by reducing recovery time.

“Through research and physician expertise Largo Medical Center and the Florida Bariatric Centers continue to offer the latest in technology to local residents as well as those visiting from abroad,” said Anthony Degina, Chief Executive Officer at Largo Medical Center.

The da Vinci surgical system works in 3D high-definition with special instruments for the wrist that bend and rotate giving the surgeon a greater range of motion than the human wrist. This enables surgeons to operate with enhanced vision, precision, dexterity and control.
